Growing up a Florida girl, I had never heard of Sea Island. My family typically ventured to New Smyrna Beach, Islamorada, Palm Beach, and in the summer, the Northeast to beat the heat (typically New York, Cape Cod, and Vermont). However, when I moved to Atlanta almost 7 years ago, all of the Georgia Peaches mentioned they were off to 30A or Sea Island so, of course, I knew I had to make my way there.

Once I met my lover, later to be my future husband…. A few months into our relationship he asked me if I wanted to spend New Years at Sea Island at his grandparent’s house. I said sure.. why not. New Years’ at the beach - sounds fun right?! I had no idea that my life would be forever changed.

Sea Island is a privately owned island, a part of the Golden Isles of Georgia (right next to St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island). It is a privately owned island and you must be staying at one of their hotels, have a home on the island and/or have a Sea Island membership. It’s hard for me to describe, but it's a mix of southern hospitality meets old world charm.

One of the most common questions people ask in the DM’s is about where to stay when traveling to Sea Island. I’ve had the opportunity to stay at all 3 properties that Sea Island has to offer (The Cloister, The Lodge, and The Inn). The Cloister by far is worth every single penny. I will stay here every single time moving forward (yes it’s worth it!) I typically ask for a room in the Garden Wing - the rooms are white, bright, and beautiful! Not only is The Cloister conveniently located to everything, in my opinion, it is also the most picturesque. The back of The Cloister has a little marina, and has a charter boat available! It is great for wedding festivities or events you may have!

The Lodge (golf lovers dream) is 15 minutes away from The Cloister and The Inn is about 10 minutes away. The Sea Island shuttle is available, or you can drive yourself if staying at one of the outer locations. If staying at the hotel, I highly recommend making your hotel reservations in advance. Depending on the season/weekend it can be very difficult to get a reservation at your desired time.

Food

Now let's talk food!! While there are plenty of great restaurant options on St. Simons, I believe if you are spending the $$$ to stay at Sea Island, why not take advantage of the amazing restaurants on property - at least for a few of your nights! Check out the dining options below!

The Cloister

River Bar (not on the menu anymore but the nachos are a must!)

Wonderland (Ice Cream, Candy, and baked goods) True Story: one New Years I knew I wanted a brownie + cookies as a late-night snack but I didn’t want to carry it around all night. I hid my treats in a bush…sealed of course and came back a few hours later)

The Lodge

I love love love The Lodge. One of my favorite activities (being Irish and all) is watching the Bagpiper at sunset from 5-6 pm (I believe these hours may change during daylight savings so be sure to double-check).

Colt & Alison (Overlooks the 18th hole! Sea Island’s high-end steakhouse)

When I travel, I am not one for engaging in a lot of activities that do not include eating and drinking. However, The Spa is somewhere I will absolutely make an exception. I like to spend at least a few hours each trip relaxing and indulging in self-care. It was absolutely beautiful, unlike any spa I have ever been to! The Spa at Sea Island is a luxury resort spa, with a plethora of treatments and top-tier relaxation services. The waterfall and garden atrium are simply to die for!
